Information concerning GASW members Accreditation and Reaccreditation to UKCP
November 2024
GASW currently operates as an organisational member (OM) of UKCP, under the College of Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis (CPJA). GASW has a responsibility to reaccredit its members by ensuring that they are of “good standing” and also that its governance as an OM, complies with UKCP standards. GASW is currently undergoing a five yearly Review by UKCP and CPJA, to ensure our compliance with their regulations.
Council is expecting GASW to remain open long enough to allow for all new graduates of the QC to comply with the UKCP’s requirement that they complete their first year of accreditation with UKCP, as members of GASW. This means that GASW will remain an OM of UKCP until at least, December 2025 and possibly a few months into 2026 to accommodate this. New QC graduates are currently advised to register with UKCP as soon as possible after qualification. GASW will write to inform UKCP when a trainee has graduated. This advised immediacy is to ensure that current QC Trainees have the opportunity to register with UKCP and complete their first year of accreditation under GASW.
After December 2025 and if GASW then ceases to remain an OM, GASW members in clinical practice will be required to register with UKCP as Direct Members. Normally when someone wants to transfer to Direct Membership, they need to contact the UKCP Membership Team
Membership@ukcp.org.uk The team will send them the transfer form to complete and will also explain all the relevant fees involved. When the transfer form is returned the Membership team then check the individuals ‘good standing’ with GASW. If all is well, then the person can transfer to Direct Membership.
A point to note, is that individuals cannot transfer to Direct Membership if they are due to reaccredit with UKCP the same year. In practice this is not of concern to GASW members, because GASW reaccredits using the current CPD forms annually anyway. UKCP reaccredits its members every 5 years. Also, if a GASW members ‘good standing’ cannot be confirmed by GASW then they would have to complete a further review form which would be assessed by their CPJA. Once an individual becomes a Direct member of CPJA, the CPJA reaccreditation team work with UKCP to oversee their 5 yearly reaccreditation. In the case of GASW closing and a number of its members transferring to Direct membership relatively quickly, CPJA would very likely have some flexibility on the last two points above.
Of course, some GASW members, in the case of closure, might wish to join another organisation instead of becoming a Direct member, in which case they would need to follow the relevant accreditation and membership procedure for that organisation. Once an individual becomes a direct member of CPJA, the CPJA reaccreditation team work with UKCP to oversee their 5 yearly reaccreditation.
GASW Council encourages members to remain in GASW until at least December 2025. We will then have the opportunity and the income to remain a viable operation in support of our current trainees and new graduates. Going forward over the next year, we have the monthly Median group convened by an external conductor. This is an opportunity to share our ideas around what it means to be a community of group analysts in the SW and where we want to take GASW in the future. There may be questions concerning the above that need further discussion at the Median Group.
